Situato tra i due golfi del Mar Rosso, quello di Suez e quello di Aqaba, il deserto del Sinai forma la penisola che unisce l'Africa all'Asia. Alla sua estremità sud-orientale si trova Sharm el Sheikh, mecca dei subacquei e dei patiti dell'abbronzatura. Situato alle pendici del Monte Sinai, è il luogo dove, secondo la tradizione, Mosè si imbatté nel roveto ardente. Molti amano ascendere il Monte Sinai per assistere alle sue spettacolari albe, concludendo l'escursione con una visita al monastero. Il monastero di Santa Caterina risale al sesto secolo ed ospita numerose opere d'arte.
